The sign says it all. Bristol, Connecticut, that is. Built in 1903.
Eli Terry Jr. Water Wheel - Plymouth, CT - taken at 2:30 a.m. over 30 seconds.
John J. Jennings School - built in 1920 - now private apartments. I love this building and all its memories. I went to school here from kindergarten through 8th grade. Named after a Bristol mayor.
Train departing in The Netherlands where I used to teach (American School of The Hague).
More of "John J. Jennings Jailhouse" ...as we used to call it in our youth. Not fair...I loved this place...still do.
Dawn's early light coming up on my elementary school - kindergarten through grade 8.
Turns out that one of my former students now owns this building. It's named after her mom who was her best friend.
That would be 291 Burlington Avenue. Those three windows are where Miss Dorothy Litke's office was. For 45 years, she was the secretary for the entire school until she retired. Everyone loved her and she treated every student with kindness.
Yes, that's the moon in the upper left giving way to the rising sun (behind me. as I took this photo). The white dot directly above the roof ...I am thinking...is a planet.
This is a different school. It is the old Bristol High School (1921), which then became Bristol Central High School in 1959, which then became Memorial Boulevard Middle School in 1967 , which then became abandoned in 2012. But wait, there's good news! Construction is set to begin any month now to transform this elegant old building into a Magnet School for the Arts (Memorial Boulevard Intradistrict Arts Magnet School). It is slated to open in the Fall of 2022. Stay tuned.
Re: the above school, if you'd enjoy watching 13 minutes of both history and nostalgia, i.e., of what this school looks like (inside and outside) before construction, have a look at this fast-paced photo / musical montage. Speakers cranked!
Every town or city has an honored place. Mine is called Memorial Boulevard. It was dedicated in 1921 on honor of the 48 soldiers who were killed in World War I. Since then, all those from all wars have areas dedicated to them.
Along the sides a tree was planted for each one of these 48 World War I soldiers killed in action.
Taken at dawn.
In the Revolutionary War, Bristol lost 12.
In the Civil War, 54 Bristol soldiers were killed.
Fredericksburg was a Union defeat, but Antietam was the bloodiest.
1 out of 4 families lost someone in WW II (143 killed). Korea - 15 died.
